The German term
"Bergbauernhof"(mountain peasant farm) may irritate because
one thinks of farms in the alps with the same names. In Harz, however,
this term refers to "Bergstadt" (town in the mountains) and
has close affiliation to "Bergwerk" (mines) which were present
in former times everywhere in the Harz mountain.
The term "Klein-Tirol" (Little Tirol) on the other hand was probably given by some holiday
guests a few decades ago because of Wildemann's location. The area where
the farm is today was for quite some time a carpenter's shop and a place
where wooden boxes were made. there was also a small guest house. Later
some privat persons made this place into a hotel which in 1970 burned
down and the area was unused for quite some time.
With assistance
of a generous sponsor it became possible to establish the farm (Bergbauernhof)
which was opened on 10 August 1996 with a large ceremony.
Approximately 30
animals, cows, cattle and calves as well as some Harz goats are now
kept in a pen on straw. the so-called "foxes", a special kind
of shepherd dogs to guard the herd are also living there.
The "Society
for maintenance of old and endangered domestic animals" appointed
this farm as "Arche-Hof" (only
of german). |
