All colored goats in Germany are called officially 'previous
multicolored German goat'. Under this general term today also all
formerly regional-typical races are included.
For our landscape
the Harz goat was typical. Here it was bred 100 years ago in local Harz
goat breeding associations as Harz regional race. A uniform population
was achieved by aiming at the breed target, which is described as follows:
With eel-line, white belly, towards the flanks defined with a black
region, legs black coloured. The goats have a weight of approx. 45-60
kg, he-goats approx. 65-80 kg.
Until a few years
ago, the Harz goat seemed to be extinct. In some sheep flocks for landscape
conservation one can discover, however, from time to time still goats
of that type. Now also our association has the objective to re-breed
the Harz goat so that this animal, adapted to Harz climate will be protected
against extinction.
The Harz goat was
considered in former times as the "cow of the poor man". The
poorer miners who could not keep an own cow, had just a goat. The goat
was also very resistant and undemanding and delivered a high amount
of milk. Goat's milk was important for the laborers in ore industry
in the Harz since it help protect against the toxic substances inhaled
during work.
Contrary to the
cows, the goats were not allowed to graze in the forest. As in the year
1761, a herdman did let his goats graze in the forest, he was punished
for two hours in neck iron.
1967 were only one
goat recorded. The goat husbandry was terminated.
Today one can not only see this race in Wildemann again, animal keepers
in many other Harz places are also devoted to breeding Harz goats. Goat
milk and goat cheese became again strongly demanded products which are
increasingly offered on regional markets. |
